Powerful Words

Authors express even the ordinary with extraordinary words. Some words are charged with energy. They conjure images, stir the senses, enrage, or engage.

I will give you a few examples of what I mean:

  • Alone
  • Vibrant
  • Skitter

Now, make a list of as many powerful words as you can. You’ll want to keep the list. As time passes, you may add to the list. Then, when you are working on a project one day, and you are searching for a powerful word, consult your list. This list can be a fabulous resource for authors.

Please let me hear from you on this. One of the reasons for this blog is to help my fellow writers to improve their craft.

A Song and a Story

I have been writing since I was 5 years old. Actually, I started creating comic books with a friend. I created a series called “Cutie Lucy”, starring the title character who was a cat living in a world where cats are the people. Her and her boyfriend, Tigre, had hilarious adventures (at least according to a 5 year-old’s imagination.

I was also writing short stories- horror, comedy, and science fiction. Of course, I thought they were brilliant, but in reality, they were not good. The point is, since before kindergarten, I have been a creative writer.

When I began playing guitar at age 13, I began writing songs. On my own, I have written about 275 songs; and in collaboration with my best friend during my teen and early adult years, together we wrote about 65 songs. Most of these songs were not very good. Some were and still are what I consider excellent. Most of them no longer exist.

Inspired by Cheech & Chong, I began writing comedy sketches that my brother and I recorded. We did all of the voices and sound effects. I was “Coco” and my brother was “Angelo”. We recorded enough material to fill 3 albums. None of it has survived over the years.

When I was 19, I started writing a book called “SNOOKERED”, a semi-autobiographical story about a young man addicted to gambling at pool. I never finished it.

I gravitated toward short stories because I could finish them. I estimate that I have thus far written about 300 short stories.

The next installment will be about going from “writing” to “being a writer”!

Here I am, 52 1/2 years old, still trying to learn to control my mouth. I have a lifetime full of miscommunication and saying things I should not say. It has strained relationships and cost me jobs.

I think that’s one of the reasons I write. I am able to carefully construct my words and can more clearly communicate than I am often able to do in a conversation.

Tomorrow I return to work after my mouth got me in some trouble. I was not insulting or rude, just presumptuous and inappropriate. I pray daily that I can be a blessing to everyone I come in contact with. I need to guard my tongue.

James 3:3-12
Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.”

I guess my struggle is nothing new. Is there anybody out there who has the same struggle?

What I Write

My first book is completed and I am searching for a traditional publisher. It is titled: MORE THAN SONGS. It is a biblical examination of WORSHIP.

This is my design for a possible cover

My second book is in the works. It’s called LEAVEN OF THE PHARISEES. It is a biblical understanding of how God feels about religion.

This is the first post in my new blog. Please check out my bio.

I will try to post regularly. This blog may have some of my personal observations, or simply updates on my writing career. I will include links to my published work. Also, links to websites that I believe are beneficial to writers.

To my future readers who are writers:

I will often have information about agents and publishers.

I will often include a Writing Challenge Prompt.

My goal in this blog is to help my fellow writers to further our craft. I have grown as an author by reading and carefully critiquing the work of others. I learn a lot from other writers. Hopefully, we can interact and learn from each other.

Until my next post, IMAGINATION IS A GIFT… OPEN IT!
